Three Forks Area Historical Society

ABOUT US:
The Three Forks Area Historical Society is a non-profit 501 (3c) organization which operates the Headwaters Heritage Museum and the Railroad and Trident Heritage Center in Three Forks, Montana. It is the mission of the Society to preserve and make available for study and research the history and culture of the area surrounding the Headwaters of the Missouri River.

LOCATIONS AND OPERATIONS:
The Society operates two seasonal museums that are open from June 1 to September 30 each year or by appointment in the off-season. Group tours or tours with special topics can be arranged with advanced notice. Both museums are free and open to the public. We do ask for contributions to keep our museums operating.

The Headwaters Heritage Museum, in operation since 1982, is located in downtown Three Forks, Montana at 202 S. Main, at the corner of Main and Cedar. Hours: 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 11 am to 3 pm on Sundays.

The Railroad and Trident Heritage Center, dedicated in 2021, is located in John Adams Milwaukee Railroad Park at the northern end of Main Street. Hours: 9 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

COLLECTIONS:
Housed in the Headwaters Heritage Museum, the area's history and culture spans a wide range and the museum reflects that variety. We have Native American art and artifacts, Lewis and Clark memorabilia, fur trader exhibits, mining and agriculture exhibits as well as exhibits of early settlers and businesses, veterans and homemakers. We also maintain Montana's oldest anvil and our barbed wire collection is nearly a national treasure. We have a sizable photo archive, an obituary collection and a newspaper microfilm library for research.

Housed in the former Northern Pacific Railroad Depot moved from Trident, MT, the Railroad and Trident Heritage Center holds artifacts dating from the 1860's when railroads first came to the area as well as items related to the village of Trident, once the company town of Three Forks Portland Cement Company.

Fifteen minutes or the whole day, it's time well spent to visit us.
